The Delhi Metro RS1 Refurbishment Project is a major mid-life overhaul initiative launched by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to modernize its oldest rolling stock. The project targets 70 first-generation trains running on the Red Line and Blue Line that were inducted between 2002 and 2007 and have completed nearly two decades of service. The goal is to extend their operational lifespan while matching the safety and comfort standards of DMRC’s newest trains.
To improve the reliability of its electrical systems, DMRC decided to replace its ageing contactor-based components. The existing technology required regular spare-parts replacement and created a significant maintenance burden. Mors Smitt relays offered a proven alternative, as DMRC had already used them successfully in other projects.
The transition, however, was not simply a matter of replacing one component with another. DMRC’s primary concern was the mechanical fit of the new relay panel within the existing installation. The solution needed to combine proven relay performance with a design that matched the available dimensions and existing system configuration.

To address this challenge, the Mors Smitt engineering team developed a space-efficient relay panel concept that demonstrated how modern relay technology could be integrated within the available installation space and existing system configuration.
This concept helped establish the feasibility of the refurbishment project and supported the successful adoption of Mors Smitt relays, providing improved reliability, reduced maintenance requirements and enhanced long-term performance.
