Les relais temporisés peuvent être déclenchés de deux manières : en appliquant la tension d'alimentation d'entrée ou auxiliaire, ce qui lance soit la fonction de temporisation immédiatement, soit prépare le relais à être déclenché, ou en appliquant un signal de déclenchement séparé après que la tension d'alimentation est présente. Ce déclenchement peut être un interrupteur de commande (contact sec) ou un signal de tension.
